What IS a Personal Life Coach?
What is a Personal Life Coach? When one thinks of a Coach, you might think of the greats in Sports. In fact, Coach Tom Landry of the Football Hall of Fame said it well. “A coach is someone who gets you to do what you don’t want to do, so you can be who you want to be.” The best explanation I have found, to differentiate Coaching from Counseling and Therapy, is this. Counseling and Therapy seek to “fix” a person by revisiting the past so as to understand why a person is as he or she is. Cases involving clinical mental illness or extreme problems as such should be referred to the appropriate health care provider. A Life Coach seeks to move a functional person forward toward their goals through a Co-Creative Relationship or Partnership. Life Coaching is a combining of resources toward a common good. The Coach is there to listen, support and ask probing questions so the Client is able to discover or define solutions and steps to overcome challenges to become successful. You may already sense that you really do have a sense of what you want or would like to do. Sometimes the path is not clear or the steps may seem daunting. You know the answers deep down inside. You just need a little help. That is where your co-creative partnership shines the way or nudges you forward. Why Coaching? Coaching has been used by athletes, singers, actors, successful executives for years. These people have been wise enough to understand that two minds working together on a challenge can produce much more than just the sum of the two parts. Having an intelligent, dependable, third party professional to provide support, guidance and accountability propels the “Coach-ee” forward toward his or her goals. In the research done by Dave Guerra for his book, “Superperformance,” a common denominator among the successful people in the study was the use of mentoring and life coaching. Who Benefits from Life Coaching? Any person that has a desire to do more with his or her life, whether professionally or personally, benefits from Coaching. Let’s face it. If it were so easy for people to just be or do what they want, there would be many, many more extremely happy and successful people in the world. Sometimes it takes a major “wake-up call” or event in our lives to make us realize that the years are slipping by and we are no closer to our goals and dreams. We may have made attempts and given up for any number of reasons…life gets in the way, others need our time, maybe we feel we really aren’t so important after all, or I’ll get to that when I have time. Most people just can’t seem to get it done on their own. Just another great reason to invest in yourself by hiring
Your Own Personal Life Coach.
So ask yourself - where are you now? Where do you want to be? It takes time to evolve into the person we want to be, even if we believe we can do it (Let alone if we are unsure – which puts us in the majority). It takes a concerted, consistent effort to move through the steps toward our goals. Or maybe the vision is unclear – something nags at us that there is more that we want to do – but what? And if we know the What, then How do we get there? Who will respect our dreams, support our goals and work toward helping us fulfill our desires? Who will focus on our agenda instead of driving toward their own? That is the purpose of having your own coach. Your coach’s mission is to respect, support and move you forward toward the very Success that you seek. Cheers to YOUR SuCCess! ~ Janus Moncur
