Career Change Advice or Top 10 Ways to Cope with Job Transition
The only true constant in life is Change. In good times and not so good times, we can be certain that our careers will change. This article gives you career change advice to help you with the transitions. Job transitions can be stressful— whether they are a result of a layoff, a new job or working extra hours because others workers were laid off. If you’re facing a change in your career, consider the following. 1. Work on your thoughts. Stop – Take a deep breath and calm your fears. Two thoughts cannot exist in your mind at the same time so, replace the negative thoughts with positive ones. Reinforce your sense of hope and happiness. 2. Let go of how things were “supposed to be” and accept “how things are.” Find appreciation for what is. Find the lesson or the gift in the situation. It may not be easy to find, but it is there. 3. Take an honest look at yourself. What are your strengths, weaknesses, skills? How did those influence—positively or negatively—your transition? You might look at gaining additional
professional development.
4. Engage your curiosity. What went wrong, or right? What could you have done better? What worked really well?
5. Focus on what you WANT, and less on what you DON'T WANT. Keep your head up and focus forward.
6. Reassure (or avoid) those who are threatened by, or jealous of, the change.
7. Find support. Seek out positive support networks. Since your transition affects your family as well, it may be better to seek the outside support of friends or professionals.
8. Step up your self-care. Major changes are physically and emotionally taxing. You need self-care now more than ever. Get a little extra sleep and a bit more exercise to make yourself stronger and to feel that much better.
9. Create your own rite of passage. Ceremony and ritual help with all transitions.
10. Keep things in perspective. Or try on a new perspective. Don’t get stuck in the gunk. Remember, the only constant is change. This is just another little jump in the show-ring of life.
